A man attempts to rescue his daughter from the clutches of a kidnapper
has Dr. S.Srinivasan, aka Lathika Srinivasan, playing the lead role under his own direction and production banner Lathika Films
. Meenakshi Kailash, who shares the screen with Lathika Srinivasan, makes her debut in Lathika. Story, Screenplay, Music and co-direction, are all done by R. Bharathan. Cinematography is by T. Ari Pazhani and editing has been done by Saravana Krishnan.
Recent times have seen an increase in tamil movies made based on the Thriller genre. Lathika is one such thriller, and is all about the kidnap and rescue attempt of a baby from the clutches of an evil kidnapper.
Lathika opens with an unknown man dressed in black, immediately stealing the attention of the audience, making one sit tight on their seat. The very next sequence makes one fall down from the seat - The hero's introduction of Dr. Srinivasan, who has the title Power star. An opening song with the mass hero type visuals, and an yesteryear super hit song Neenga nalla irukkanum naadu munnera
in which Dr. Srinivasan compares himself with the evergreen legend M.G.R. Then comes a fight sequence, followed by a duet song Malare kurinji malare
also taken from a M.G.R. movie. Needless to say, these would test one's patience.
It is only at the end of the first half of the movie that Lathika, the small girl, is kidnapped by someone. If the audience thought that the whole second half is all about what happens to Lathika, they are mistaken. The flash back and dream sequences continue in the second half as well. While the yesteryear actor Rahuman appears on screen, one can realize that he plays the negative role in Lathika. Suspense and Lathika are at the opposite poles, and Lathika is supposed to be a thriller movie.
Dr. Srinivasan is by profession, a doctor, and it is due to his passion for the movie industry that he has directed, produced and starred in Lathika. He should select a story and script that is apt for his age and his appearance. Though his overall performance is only average, Lathika is a brave attempt from him.
Meenakshi Kailash, the female lead, has delivered a good performance. The sequence where-in she mistakes her daughter to be dead is good. Rahuman, who plays the negative role, looks great after having lost a lot of weight. Though he has done a good job, he has not been used well and is wasted in Lathika. Debutant actress Pooja, who plays as Rahuman's wife, has given a neat performance.
R. Bharathan, who has taken charge of the story, screenplay, music & co-direction, should be appreciated for his background score, which is extraordinary. However, all the songs are forgettable. Though most of the sequences are shot at night, Cinematography by T. Ari Pazhani is excellent. Saravana Krishnan's editing helps the movie's pace.
Lathika boils down to yet another usual story with poor screenplay and plenty of loopholes. A climax similar to yesteryear super hit film Rayil Payanagalil
from T.Rajenther is unbelievable since the director had said during the audio release of Lathika that the climax will be the highlight of Lathika. Overall, Lathika is poor in terms of story depth, screenplay & casting. Lathika is a clear Can't Watch!
