The story of a youngster who has a psychological disorder, and the impact of the same on his lady love
3 is the much awaited film of National Award winner Dhanush, also being the debut directional of Aishwarya Dhanush. A movie carried on the shoulder's of a song, probably the first ever song from the Indian Industry to sky rocket to such World fame, Why This Kolaveri Di
3 begins with high school love blossoming between Ram (Dhanush) & Janani (Shruthi Haasan). Various interesting sequences sketch their love story from school upto marriage. With all going so fine, a terrible tragedy strikes. The movie is all about this tragedy and its impact.
With the movie presented in flashback format, the first half is extremely entertaining and fun filled, with most scenes sure to remind one of their own school days. Dhanush's entry, his attempts to win Shruti Haasan's attention, his proposal scene, and the tuition class sequences are fabulous and beautifully conveys the attitude of today's youth.
Post this, the Director chooses to change gears, for this is a psychological thriller, though there is no valid point in the script to warrant for this. Stretchy and illogical sequences test our patience. Prepare to dive into Anniyan, Kadhal Kondain, Mandhira Punnagai, Porali and Mayakkam Enna. In fact, it being Dhanush, you almost get a feel of watching Mayakkam Enna's sequel!
But then, thats not even close to the disappointment that hits you when you had to watch the most popular song in the history of Indian Cinema being presented as a simple beach dance number. After talk of making a special video to showcase Kolaveri reactions from around the world, the “3” team end up doing NOTHING
Award winning actor Dhaush once again proves his talent in 3. He is fit as a fiddle and aptly resembles a school boy. That he has gone a decade back to match his appearance in Thulluvadho Ilamai (2002) is awesome! Shruthi Hassan also does well except for her crying sequences. Overall, the pair's chemistry is awesome, which makes the first half work like it did.
Aishwarya Dhanush's beautiful characterization is the biggest strength of the movie. Anirudh's Music and background score is the other pillar of the movie. All the songs in the movie will stay with us for long. Anirudh hits the nail on the head to prove that Kolaveri is not simply a one-off success, and that he has so much more in store for music lovers!
Siva Karthikeyan does an awesome job. Mayakkam Enna fame Sundhar, Prabhu, Rohini, Banupriya, and the little girl who plays as Shruthi's sister also perform well. Velraj's cinematography is top notch & brilliant. Editing by Khola Bhaskar could have been sharper in the second half.
Overall, 3 takes off well but falters and falls in the second half. But that cannot take away the perfect direction, apt characterization, sizzling music and beautiful sequences of the first half. 3 is a Can Watch
